Preocupada, mi madre empezó a hacerme preguntas.

Investigation by Iván Vega Recabal

Below, we present the testimony of Paula Alderete, from Temuco, Chile, who shares a series of experiences that began during her early childhood, around 1994, when she was only four years old, and continued to occur over the following years.

Her account takes us to southern Chile and reconstructs memories that remained with her from childhood into adulthood. Paula’s young age when these events began, along with the fact that her experiences continued over a period of several years, makes this a testimony worth hearing directly in her own words.

Make yourself comfortable, because a new UFO Testimony begins here.

It all began when I was only four years old. My mother remembers that one very cold winter night, at around three in the morning, she found me awake, staring intently out the window. At first, it may have seemed like an isolated behavior, one of those strange things that can happen with a young child. However, the same scene began repeating itself several times a week.

Concerned, my mother started asking me questions. She wanted to know whether I was having trouble sleeping, whether I was having nightmares or disturbing dreams, or whether there was some reason why I could not fall asleep and remained awake at such a late hour. My answer was simple, but probably unexpected: I told her that I was waiting for “the lights” to come.

My mother is quite a skeptical person, so at first she interpreted this as something perfectly normal within a child’s imagination. I was four years old, and from her perspective, it could simply have been the fantasy of a little girl.

But the nights continued to pass, and the situation persisted for approximately two weeks. My mother kept finding me awake and looking outside. Eventually, she scolded me, mainly because she was afraid I might get sick. As I mentioned earlier, it was the middle of winter, and we lived in Temuco, a city in southern Chile where nighttime temperatures during that season can easily approach 0°C.

That was when I explained something that made the situation take on a different meaning for her. I told her that whenever she began to wake up, “the lights” that came to see me would leave or disappear.

My mother was deeply unsettled by that explanation. As she recalls, I was a completely normal child. Furthermore, at that time—this was around 1994—I was not particularly exposed to television programs about UFOs, extraterrestrials, or similar phenomena. Nor was I surrounded by people who regularly discussed those subjects. For that reason, she found it difficult to understand where the ideas and descriptions I was beginning to express could have come from.

My mother’s uncertainty increased when I entered preschool. In the drawings and activities I did at school, I would usually depict scenes that were quite typical for a child my age: a house, a tree, the sky, the Sun, and myself. However, there was one recurring element that particularly caught people’s attention. Alongside those childhood landscapes, I would add what I described as “flying saucers,” as well as anthropomorphic beings appearing within the scenes.

Those elements became so frequent that my preschool teacher decided to call my mother to discuss what she had been noticing in my work. From an educational perspective, she ultimately considered that it could simply be part of a normal stage of childhood development and associated those figures with the possibility that I had imaginary friends.

For my mother, however, the matter was not so easy to dismiss, especially because the drawings coincided with what I had already been telling her for some time about those “lights.”

I also have memories of my own from those years. I remember, for example, riding home in the school van and seeing something that, both from my childhood perspective and from the image that remains in my memory today, looked like a flying saucer. I do not know whether there would be a more appropriate term to describe that supposed “craft”; that is simply the shape that remained imprinted in my mind and the closest way I can describe what I remember seeing.

I have another memory from a beach vacation in 1996. There, I once again saw objects that I associated with those I had seen before. I even still have a photograph from that trip in which I appear in my mother’s arms, and on the horizon I believe I can make out something that might resemble a craft passing in the distance. I am not claiming that the photograph can prove what that object actually was, but it is particularly meaningful to me because it comes from the very period when these episodes were a recurring part of my childhood.

Altogether, this subject remained present in my life, in one way or another, for approximately three years.

But there was one event that marked a turning point, because that time I was no longer the only person claiming to have seen something.

It happened on September 18, 1996. It was around noon, and my mother and I were traveling by car along Uruguay Street, near the Universidad de La Frontera in Temuco. At one point, I insistently asked her to please stop the car. I needed her to look up at the sky because I wanted her to see for herself that UFOs really did exist.

My mother then looked out the car window, toward the sky and to the west.

And this time, she saw something too.

According to her own recollection, she observed an object that looked like a flying saucer. When she talks about that moment, she says that one of the things that struck her most was the altitude at which it appeared to be traveling. From her perspective, it was too low to look like a conventional airplane, but at the same time—considering that it was during Chile’s Independence Day celebrations and that kites were commonly seen in the sky—it appeared to be too high to be one of them.

My mother also remembers that the object appeared to be rotating on its own axis. In addition, it seemed to shine from different angles. She has considered the possibility that sunlight may have been reflecting off its surface, producing that intense reflective effect. In any case, what matters in her recollection is that what she observed seemed strange enough that she could not immediately identify it as anything ordinary.

After that episode, we continued on our way to my grandparents’ house. My mother was deeply shaken, almost in a state of shock over what she had just witnessed. Her reaction was so noticeable that when one of my uncles arrived, he immediately asked what had happened.

The experience caused enough concern within the family that they decided to make an inquiry. According to my family’s recollection, they called an Air Force base to ask whether any airplane or small aircraft had been flying over the skies of Temuco around noon. The answer they received was no.

That information does not, by itself, explain what we observed that day, but it became part of our family’s memory of the event and raised even more questions about what had happened.

For many years, all of these episodes remained as memories from my childhood: the nights spent by the window, those “lights” I said I was waiting for, the drawings I made in preschool, the objects I remember seeing from the school van and during our vacation, and finally that event on September 18, 1996, when my mother also witnessed something she was unable to identify.
