Ivar, residente del Valle de Elqui y aficionado al trekking, comparte una experiencia que tuvo lugar en la ciudad de La Serena, en la Región de Coquimbo, Chile. Los hechos se remontan al año 2015, durante una madrugada de jueves, aproximadamente a la 1:30, cuando se encontraba junto a un amigo y compañero de departamento.

El escenario fue el sector de Avenida del Mar, en las cercanías del Faro Monumental de La Serena, uno de los lugares más reconocibles de la ciudad. Lo ocurrido aquella madrugada permanecería profundamente grabado en la memoria de ambos testigos y, años después, Ivar decidió compartir su experiencia.

Soy del Valle de Elqui y siempre subo cerros, ya que practico trekking. En este valle he visto muchas cosas inexplicables e impresionantes, pero, curiosamente, lo más increíble que me ha tocado presenciar ocurrió en la ciudad de La Serena. Es irónico, porque siempre pensé que lo más sorprendente lo vería aquí, en el Valle del Elqui, debido a toda la mística que rodea a este lugar. Sin embargo, no fue así.

Era el año 2015. Recuerdo que era un día jueves, aproximadamente a la 1:30 de la madrugada. Yo estaba durmiendo, mientras mi amigo y compañero de departamento estaba carreteando —de fiesta, como decimos en Chile—. De pronto, entró de golpe al departamento, despertándome. Estaba muy angustiado y me dijo que había estado observando un objeto extraño en el cielo. Según me contó, ninguna de las personas que estaba con él había querido salir para verlo.

Para quienes conocen La Serena, nos encontrábamos justo en el sector de Avenida del Mar, cerca del Faro Monumental, ubicado junto a la playa y considerado uno de los símbolos más reconocibles de la ciudad.

Al ver a mi amigo tan angustiado por la situación, me levanté inmediatamente y salimos al balcón para averiguar de qué se trataba. El departamento tenía una pequeña terraza en el primer piso del edificio, y fue allí donde finalmente pude divisar aquello que mi amigo había estado observando.

En el horizonte se veía algo parecido a una estrella amarilla de gran tamaño que se desplazaba en dirección a la ciudad de Coquimbo. Evidentemente, digo “estrella” porque, hasta ese momento, era la referencia más cercana que teníamos para describir su apariencia. Sin embargo, muy dentro de nosotros sentíamos que estábamos observando algo inusual.

Para que puedan hacerse una idea, especialmente quienes conocen la zona, podría utilizar como referencia la Cruz del Tercer Milenio de Coquimbo, observada desde el sector del Faro de La Serena. Aquella luz avanzaba prácticamente en línea recta y a gran velocidad cuando, de pronto, ocurrió algo que todavía me cuesta describir.

De un segundo a otro, pareció como si la propia luz hubiera explotado o implosionado. El resplandor aumentó de tal manera que llegó a encandilarnos. Y precisamente en ese instante cambió de dirección.

Ahora venía hacia el norte, directamente hacia el sector donde nos encontrábamos nosotros.

Lo extraño fue que el cambio pareció producirse sin realizar una curva visible. Tampoco vimos que el objeto tuviera que ascender o descender para modificar su trayectoria. Desde nuestra perspectiva, simplemente cambió de dirección de manera repentina y continuó avanzando.

Estábamos completamente asombrados.

De pronto, aquella luz llegó aproximadamente frente a nuestra posición mientras continuaba desplazándose sobre el mar. Entonces ocurrió otro cambio extraño: lo que hasta ese momento parecía una gran estrella amarilla y luminosa comenzó a mostrar luces semejantes a las de un avión. Por un instante pensamos que quizá se trataba precisamente de eso, o incluso que aquello intentaba confundirse visualmente con un avión convencional. Fuera lo que fuese, comenzó a aproximarse cada vez más hacia la costa.

Mientras más se acercaba, más intensa parecía hacerse la luz.

—Un drone —pensábamos.

Era nuestra manera de buscar una explicación lógica y conocida para lo que estábamos viendo. Necesitábamos relacionarlo con algo familiar, con alguna tecnología que pudiéramos reconocer.

Mientras todo esto ocurría, vimos también a un hombre de aproximadamente treinta años que se encontraba frente a nosotros. Estaba grabando el fenómeno con su teléfono, apoyado sobre el techo de un automóvil blanco, de apariencia algo antigua. Recuerdo claramente aquella escena porque, cuando el objeto se aproximó mucho más hacia la calle, aquel hombre dejó de grabar, se subió rápidamente al automóvil y salió del lugar acelerando.

Nosotros también estábamos grabando, aunque lo hacíamos con un teléfono bastante antiguo que tenía una cámara bien “penca”, como decimos en Chile; es decir, una cámara de muy baja calidad.

Y entonces ocurrió lo más impresionante.

La luz pasó directamente sobre nosotros.

Pasó sobre el edificio.

Nos quedamos paralizados, literalmente con la boca abierta.

Hasta ese momento habíamos estado contemplando una luz a la distancia, intentando comprender qué podía ser. Pero cuando estuvo sobre nosotros, nuestra percepción del fenómeno cambió completamente.

Quedamos absolutamente confundidos. Desde nuestra perspectiva, lo que teníamos delante parecía una tecnología completamente desconocida para nosotros. En ese momento llegamos incluso a pensar que aquello no podía pertenecer a este planeta, aunque esa fue, por supuesto, nuestra interpretación frente a algo para lo cual no encontrábamos ninguna explicación.

Lo que observamos parecía estar formado por un objeto o conjunto de luces de apariencia cilíndrica. Lo más extraño era que parecía transparente o semitransparente: teníamos la impresión de que se podía ver el cielo a través de su estructura.

Y había otro detalle que nos impresionó profundamente.

No emitía ningún sonido.

Nada.

Simplemente pasó sobre nosotros y sobre el edificio en completo silencio, mientras la mayoría de las personas que vivían allí permanecían durmiendo. Hasta donde supimos, nadie más en el edificio se dio cuenta de lo que acababa de ocurrir.

También puedo decir que aquello parecía ser muy grande. El objeto pasó sobrevolando un hotel que se encontraba cerca y, al compararlo visualmente con el edificio, tuvimos la impresión de que sus dimensiones eran considerablemente mayores de lo que habíamos imaginado cuando todavía lo observábamos a la distancia.

Cuando finalmente pasó sobre nosotros, reaccionamos.

Hasta ese momento habíamos permanecido contemplándolo, prácticamente inmóviles, porque realmente nos había dejado atónitos. Fue casi como sufrir un cortocircuito mental: durante unos instantes, simplemente observábamos sin saber qué hacer.

Entonces reaccionamos y corrimos.

Con la adrenalina a mil, subimos rápidamente hasta el séptimo piso del edificio con la intención de volver a observarlo y, si era posible, verlo desde una posición más elevada. Queríamos saber hacia dónde se dirigía y comprobar si continuaba desplazándose por encima de los edificios o hacia algún otro sector de la ciudad.

Pero no conseguimos verlo nuevamente.

Mientras subíamos y buscábamos desde los diferentes pisos, no logramos distinguir ninguna señal de aquella estructura ni de sus luces.

Simplemente había desaparecido.

Tiempo después, durante una fiesta, contamos esta historia. Mientras hablábamos sobre lo que habíamos presenciado aquella madrugada en La Serena, una chica nos relató que, en otra ocasión, mientras se encontraba tomando fotografías de la Luna, también había visto pasar algo muy similar.

Ese comentario hizo que volviéramos a recordar cada detalle de aquella noche: la luz amarilla desplazándose sobre el horizonte, el cambio repentino de dirección, el intenso resplandor, la aproximación hacia la costa, el hombre que grababa junto a su automóvil y, finalmente, aquella enorme estructura silenciosa que pasó directamente sobre nosotros.

Han transcurrido años desde entonces, pero la imagen permanece en nuestra memoria.

Ivar, a resident of the Elqui Valley and a trekking enthusiast, shares an experience that took place in the city of La Serena, in Chile’s Coquimbo Region. The events date back to 2015, during the early hours of a Thursday morning, at approximately 1:30 a.m., when he was with a friend who was also his roommate.

The setting was the Avenida del Mar area, near the Monumental Lighthouse of La Serena, one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks. What happened that morning would remain deeply etched in the memories of both witnesses, and years later, Ivar decided to share his experience.

I’m from the Elqui Valley, and I’m always hiking in the mountains because I practice trekking. In this valley, I’ve seen many inexplicable and impressive things, but, curiously enough, the most incredible thing I’ve ever witnessed happened in the city of La Serena. It’s ironic because I always thought I would see the most astonishing things here, in the Elqui Valley, because of all the mysticism surrounding this place. But that wasn’t the case.

It was 2015. I remember it was a Thursday, at approximately 1:30 in the morning. I was asleep while my friend and roommate was out partying—or carreteando, as we say in Chile. Suddenly, he burst into the apartment and woke me up. He was extremely distressed and told me he had been watching a strange object in the sky. According to him, none of the people he had been with wanted to go outside to see it.

For those familiar with La Serena, we were right in the Avenida del Mar area, near the Monumental Lighthouse, located beside the beach and considered one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks.

Seeing how distressed my friend was by the situation, I immediately got up, and we went out onto the balcony to find out what was going on. The apartment had a small terrace on the first floor of the building, and that was where I finally caught sight of what my friend had been observing.

On the horizon, we could see something resembling a large yellow star moving in the direction of the city of Coquimbo. Obviously, I say “star” because, at that point, it was the closest reference we had to describe its appearance. Deep down, however, we felt that we were witnessing something unusual.

To give you an idea, especially those who know the area, I could use the Third Millennium Cross in Coquimbo as a reference, as seen from the area around the La Serena Lighthouse. The light was moving practically in a straight line and at high speed when, suddenly, something happened that I still find difficult to describe.

From one second to the next, it seemed as though the light itself had exploded or imploded. The glow became so intense that it dazzled us. And at that precise moment, it changed direction.

Now it was heading north, directly toward the area where we were.

The strange thing was that the change appeared to happen without any visible turn. We also didn’t see the object climb or descend in order to alter its trajectory. From our perspective, it simply changed direction abruptly and continued moving.

We were completely astonished.

Suddenly, the light reached a point approximately in front of our position while continuing to move over the ocean. Then something else strange happened: what until then had looked like a large, bright yellow star began displaying lights similar to those of an airplane. For a moment, we thought that perhaps that was exactly what it was, or even that whatever we were seeing was somehow trying to visually resemble a conventional aircraft. Whatever it was, it began moving closer and closer to the shoreline.

The closer it came, the more intense the light seemed to become.

“A drone,” we thought.

It was our way of searching for a logical, familiar explanation for what we were seeing. We needed to associate it with something recognizable, with some kind of technology we could understand.

While all of this was happening, we also saw a man who appeared to be around thirty years old standing in front of us. He was recording the phenomenon with his phone, which he had rested on the roof of a somewhat old-looking white car. I remember that scene clearly because, when the object came much closer to the street, the man stopped recording, quickly got into his car, and sped away.

We were recording as well, although we were using a fairly old phone with a really penca camera, as we say in Chile—in other words, a very poor-quality camera.

And then the most incredible thing happened.

The light passed directly over us.

It passed over the building.

We were frozen, literally standing there with our mouths open.

Until that moment, we had been watching a light in the distance, trying to understand what it could possibly be. But when it was directly above us, our perception of the phenomenon changed completely.

We were utterly confused. From our perspective, what we were looking at seemed like a technology completely unknown to us. At that moment, we even began to think that it could not possibly belong to this planet, although that was, of course, simply our interpretation when faced with something for which we could find no explanation.

What we observed appeared to consist of an object, or a group of lights, with a cylindrical appearance. The strangest thing was that it seemed transparent or semi-transparent: we had the impression that we could see the sky through its structure.

And there was another detail that deeply impressed us.

It made no sound whatsoever.

Nothing.

It simply passed over us and over the building in complete silence while most of the people living there remained asleep. As far as we knew, no one else in the building realized what had just happened.

I can also say that whatever it was appeared to be very large. The object flew over a nearby hotel, and when we visually compared it with the building, we had the impression that its dimensions were considerably greater than we had imagined while we were still observing it from a distance.

When it finally passed over us, we reacted.

Until then, we had simply stood there watching it, practically motionless, because it had genuinely left us stunned. It was almost like experiencing a mental short circuit: for a few moments, we just stared at it without knowing what to do.

Then we snapped out of it and ran.

With our adrenaline through the roof, we quickly ran up to the seventh floor of the building, hoping to see it again and, if possible, observe it from a higher vantage point. We wanted to know where it was heading and determine whether it was continuing to move above the buildings or toward some other part of the city.

But we never saw it again.

As we climbed and searched from the different floors, we were unable to make out any sign of the structure or its lights.

It had simply disappeared.

Some time later, during a party, we told this story. As we talked about what we had witnessed that early morning in La Serena, a girl told us that, on another occasion, while she was taking photographs of the Moon, she had also seen something very similar pass by.

Her comment made us remember every detail of that night all over again: the yellow light moving across the horizon, the sudden change in direction, the intense glow, its approach toward the coast, the man recording beside his car, and finally, that enormous silent structure that passed directly over us.

Years have passed since then, but the image remains etched in our memories.
