En febrero de 2023, Damián Zubiaurre viajaba junto a su familia por las carreteras del oeste de Uruguay. El trayecto se desarrollaba desde la ciudad de Paysandú hacia Mercedes y, durante la madrugada del día 16, la familia avanzaba por la Ruta 24, en medio de una noche despejada y tranquila.

Lo que ocurrió durante aquel recorrido quedó registrado en la memoria de Damián y de su pareja, además de motivar posteriormente la conservación de algunos registros obtenidos durante la experiencia. Su relato nos traslada hasta ese solitario tramo de carretera uruguaya para conocer, desde la perspectiva directa de sus protagonistas, aquello que vivieron esa madrugada.

Hola a todos. El jueves 16 de febrero, alrededor de las 12:30 de la madrugada, veníamos en auto con mi familia. Yo manejaba, mi pareja iba sentada a mi lado y mi nena pequeña dormía en el asiento trasero. Viajábamos desde la ciudad de Paysandú, Uruguay, hacia Mercedes. La noche estaba fresca, pero era muy agradable y el cielo se encontraba sumamente despejado.

Pasadas las doce de la noche, cuando nos encontrábamos aproximadamente a la altura del kilómetro 35 de la Ruta 24, visualicé una luz bastante más grande que cualquier estrella. Estaba en el horizonte, justo sobre la ruta, a unos 35 o 40 grados de altura según mi apreciación, y se movía muy lentamente hacia la izquierda.

La observé durante unos tres o cuatro segundos, tiempo suficiente para avisarle a mi pareja:

—¡Mirá, mirá esa luz!

Después de que desapareció, nos quedamos comentando lo que acabábamos de ver.

¿Qué sería eso? Qué raro. Qué luz tan grande.

Intentábamos encontrar alguna explicación. Un satélite no parecía ser; una estrella fugaz tampoco, al menos por la forma en que nosotros habíamos observado su desplazamiento. Todo aquello nos dejó intrigados.

Pasaron unos dos o tres minutos y la luz volvió a aparecer. Pero esta vez ocurrió algo diferente: eran dos luces. La segunda parecía más «chica» que la primera. Permanecieron visibles durante aproximadamente tres o cuatro segundos y luego desaparecieron, primero una y después la otra.

Todo era muy extraño.

Asombrados porque el avistamiento se había repetido en tan poco tiempo, decidimos detener el auto a un costado de la ruta. Nos apartamos unos cinco metros y quedamos en una zona llana, con todas las luces del vehículo apagadas, esperando y especulando sobre la posibilidad de que aquello volviera a aparecer.

Yo sentía mucha curiosidad.

Esta vez esperamos un poco más, quizás unos cinco minutos. Entonces volvieron a aparecer.

Pero ahora eran tres luces.

Ante lo que estábamos viendo, atiné a hacer cambio de luces con el auto, como intentando llamar la atención de aquello que se encontraba a la distancia. Mi pareja, un tanto asustada, reaccionó inmediatamente:

—¡No! ¡Que nos van a ver!

Yo le contesté, entre la risa, la curiosidad y el asombro:

—¡Es la idea, ja, ja!

Poco después volvimos a incorporarnos a la ruta y continuamos nuestro viaje. Sin embargo, los avistamientos siguieron produciéndose aproximadamente cada dos o tres minutos y siempre parecían presentarse a una altura similar.

Era algo impresionante.

En una de aquellas apariciones pude apenas captar una de las luces con el celular. También tratamos de filmar, pero el teléfono no lograba enfocar correctamente en medio de la inmensidad y oscuridad de la noche, y además teníamos delante el parabrisas del automóvil, lo que hacía todavía más difícil conseguir un registro claro.

En total calculo que presenciamos unas siete u ocho apariciones durante aquel período, desde pasada la medianoche hasta aproximadamente las 00:30, cuando llegamos a la intersección con la Ruta 2 y nos detuvimos para cargar combustible.

A partir de allí cambiamos de rumbo y continuamos por la Ruta 2. Entonces perdimos completamente la visualización del fenómeno debido a las luces existentes en el entorno, los árboles y las nuevas condiciones del trayecto. Aquello que habíamos estado observando durante el recorrido dejó de estar a nuestra vista.

Debo decir que esta no es la primera vez que veo algo que podría identificar como un OVNI. En ocasiones anteriores siempre me había quedado la duda acerca de qué podía ser realmente aquello que había observado.

Esta vez la sensación fue diferente.

Después de revisar las fotografías que conseguí tomar aquella noche, y especialmente una de ellas, en la que me parece distinguir el reflejo de una luz sobre un objeto e incluso cierta forma o estructura, mi impresión sobre lo sucedido se hizo mucho más fuerte.

No puedo decir qué era aquel objeto desde un punto de vista técnico, pero, después de lo que vi y de revisar las fotografías, personalmente quedé convencido de haber presenciado algo extraordinario. Desde mi propia interpretación de la experiencia, considero incluso la posibilidad de que aquello tuviera un origen extraterrestre.

Eso es, al menos, lo que aquella noche y las imágenes posteriores me hicieron pensar.

Gracias por dedicarle tiempo al episodio que viví. Y agradezco también haber tenido la suerte de conseguir esas fotografías, porque quedaron como un registro de una experiencia que, para mí y para mi familia, fue verdaderamente difícil de olvidar.

Una hipótesis que merece ser investigada

Eventualmente, podríamos estar frente a una explicación relacionada con una bandada de aves que volaba a baja altura y cuyos cuerpos eran iluminados momentáneamente por las luces del automóvil. Al observar uno de los fotogramas obtenidos durante el episodio, es posible distinguir una forma que, bajo determinadas condiciones de iluminación y movimiento, podría guardar cierta semejanza con el cuerpo de un ave. Esta posibilidad, por lo tanto, no debería ser descartada sin una investigación más profunda.

Sin embargo, existen aspectos del relato que todavía requieren explicación. El testigo describe movimientos que consideró anómalos y señala que las apariciones se repitieron varias veces durante el trayecto, con intervalos de pocos minutos. Si efectivamente se trataba de aves, cabría preguntarse si correspondían a una misma bandada desplazándose por el sector o a diferentes grupos encontrados sucesivamente a lo largo de la carretera. También sería necesario determinar qué especies presentan actividad nocturna en esa zona, sus patrones de vuelo, altura habitual, comportamiento migratorio y la manera en que su plumaje podría reflejar los faros de un vehículo.

Resolver estas interrogantes requeriría una investigación de campo en la Ruta 24, idealmente con la participación de un biólogo, ornitólogo o especialista conocedor de la fauna local. Sería especialmente valioso intentar reproducir las condiciones del avistamiento —horario, ubicación, dirección del vehículo e iluminación— y contrastarlas con la presencia y comportamiento de aves en el sector.

Por ahora, el objetivo de presentar este testimonio no es establecer una conclusión definitiva, sino documentar lo que Damián Zubiaurre y su familia aseguran haber vivido, presentar los registros obtenidos y continuar profundizando en el caso. La hipótesis de las aves permanece abierta, al igual que otras explicaciones que puedan surgir a medida que aparezcan nuevos antecedentes.

In February 2023, Damián Zubiaurre was traveling with his family along the highways of western Uruguay. They were driving from the city of Paysandú toward Mercedes, and in the early hours of the 16th, the family was making their way along Route 24 beneath a clear and peaceful night sky.

What happened during that journey remained etched in the memories of Damián and his partner, and later led them to preserve some of the records captured during the experience. His account takes us to that lonely stretch of Uruguayan highway to discover, directly from the perspective of those who experienced it, what happened to them that night.

Hello, everyone. On Thursday, February 16, at around 12:30 in the morning, I was traveling by car with my family. I was driving, my partner was sitting beside me, and my young daughter was asleep in the back seat. We were traveling from the city of Paysandú, Uruguay, toward Mercedes. The night was cool but very pleasant, and the sky was exceptionally clear.

Sometime after midnight, when we were approximately at kilometer 35 on Route 24, I spotted a light that was considerably larger than any star. It was on the horizon, directly above the road, at what I estimated to be an elevation of about 35 or 40 degrees, and it was moving very slowly toward the left.

I watched it for about three or four seconds, long enough to alert my partner:

“Look, look at that light!”

After it disappeared, we started talking about what we had just seen.

What could that have been? How strange. What a huge light.

We tried to come up with some explanation. It didn’t seem to be a satellite, nor did it look like a shooting star, at least not based on the way we had seen it move. The whole thing left us intrigued.

About two or three minutes passed, and the light appeared again. But this time something was different: there were two lights. The second one seemed “smaller” than the first. They remained visible for approximately three or four seconds and then disappeared, one first and then the other.

It was all very strange.

Amazed that the sighting had repeated itself so soon, we decided to pull over to the side of the road. We moved about five meters off the roadway and stopped in a flat area, with all the car’s lights switched off, waiting and wondering whether whatever we had seen might appear again.

I was extremely curious.

This time we waited a little longer, perhaps five minutes. Then they appeared again.

But now there were three lights.

When I saw what was happening, I flashed the car’s headlights, as though trying to attract the attention of whatever was out there in the distance. My partner, somewhat frightened, immediately reacted:

“No! They’re going to see us!”

Laughing, curious, and amazed all at once, I replied:

“That’s the idea, ha ha!”

Shortly afterward, we pulled back onto the road and continued our journey. However, the sightings continued to occur approximately every two or three minutes, and the lights always seemed to appear at roughly the same elevation.

It was incredible.

During one of those appearances, I barely managed to capture one of the lights with my cell phone. We also tried to record video, but the phone couldn’t focus properly amid the vast darkness of the night. We also had the car’s windshield in front of us, making it even more difficult to obtain a clear recording.

In total, I estimate that we witnessed around seven or eight appearances during that period, from shortly after midnight until approximately 12:30 a.m., when we reached the intersection with Route 2 and stopped to get fuel.

From there, we changed direction and continued along Route 2. At that point, we completely lost sight of the phenomenon because of the lights in the surrounding area, the trees, and the new conditions along the route. Whatever we had been observing during the drive was no longer visible to us.

I should say that this was not the first time I had seen something I might identify as a UFO. On previous occasions, I had always been left wondering what it was that I had actually seen.

This time, the feeling was different.

After reviewing the photographs I managed to take that night, and one of them in particular, in which I believe I can make out the reflection of a light on an object and even a certain shape or structure, my impression of what had happened became much stronger.

I cannot say what that object was from a technical standpoint, but after what I saw and after reviewing the photographs, I personally became convinced that I had witnessed something extraordinary. Based on my own interpretation of the experience, I even consider the possibility that it may have been extraterrestrial in origin.

That, at least, is what that night and the images I later reviewed led me to believe.

Thank you for taking the time to learn about the experience I had. I am also grateful that I was fortunate enough to capture those photographs, because they remain as a record of an experience that, for me and my family, was truly difficult to forget.

A Hypothesis Worth Investigating

We may potentially be looking at an explanation involving a flock of birds flying at low altitude, their bodies momentarily illuminated by the car’s headlights. When examining one of the frames captured during the incident, it is possible to make out a shape that, under certain lighting and movement conditions, could bear some resemblance to the body of a bird. This possibility, therefore, should not be dismissed without further investigation.

However, there are aspects of the account that still require explanation. The witness describes movements that he considered anomalous and states that the appearances occurred several times throughout the journey, at intervals of only a few minutes. If they were indeed birds, one question would be whether they belonged to the same flock moving through the area or to different groups encountered successively along the highway. It would also be necessary to determine which species are active at night in this area, their flight patterns, typical altitude, migratory behavior, and the way their plumage might reflect the headlights of a vehicle.

Answering these questions would require field research along Route 24, ideally with the participation of a biologist, ornithologist, or specialist familiar with the local wildlife. It would be particularly valuable to attempt to recreate the conditions of the sighting—including the time, location, direction of travel, and lighting—and compare them with the presence and behavior of birds in the area.

For now, the purpose of presenting this testimony is not to establish a definitive conclusion, but rather to document what Damián Zubiaurre and his family say they experienced, present the recordings they obtained, and continue investigating the case in greater depth. The bird hypothesis remains open, as do other explanations that may emerge as new information becomes available.
